In what is being hailed as the a “first-of-its-kind” collaboration, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has entered into a potential $200 million antibiotics pact with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), a division of Health & Human Services (HHS), to develop drugs to fight antibiotic resistance and bioterrorism. HHS will provide $40 million for the first 18 months of the deal to develop several antibiotics in the GSK portfolio. The work will be monitored by a joint BARDA-GSK committee and, if warranted, the agreement can be renewed with HHS providing additional funding of up to a total of $200 million over 5 years.
